Our Story

Dot Lake Village was founded during the 1940s by Doris Charles. Doris moved to the area with her children from Tanacross, and was later joined by her husband, Peter, and his father, Big Albert.

Eventually, other families from Tanacross moved to the area, bringing the total residents to five families. They built homes with remnants from the Army Corps of Engineers’ construction of the Alaska Highway. The homes were small and not well-insulated, with the Charles home being the largest.

The arrival of Grandma Walters and her brother Jimmie brought the village population to about 25 residents. The Native families retained their traditional subsistence lifestyle of hunting, trapping, fishing, and gathering. They supplemented this lifestyle with occasional employment, such as in construction, when it could be found.

Dot Lake Village today is much more modern, with village water, a laundry facility and a landfill for residents. Currently the year-round population is around 14, with up to 80 residents calling Dot Lake Village home during the summer.
